RECOMMENDED MACHINES/TOOLS

PRINTING PATTERN

  1. When printing your sewing pattern, it's crucial to ensure that the pattern is printed at 100% scale or "actual size" in the print settings. This step is important to maintain the integrity of the design and ensure that the dimensions are accurate for your project. Not adjusting the print settings accordingly can result in a pattern that is either too small or too large, leading to potential issues with the fit and final outcome of your sewing project.

  2. Trim the top and one of the side edges up to the margin box. This will make it help when line up the pages for a perfectly aligned pattern.

  3. Layout the pattern lining up the diamonds and pages in alphanumeric.

  4. Tape pages together.

  5. Cut on the outside of the black line.

How to Measure you Pet and Choose the Correct Size

NOTE: This pattern is based off 3 measurements NECK, GIRTH, and LENGTH. These measurements can be adjusted very easily to fit at size pet. We will be going over what size to choose and how to adjust the size to fit correctly. Keep in mind pets do not go off of standard sizes and the sizes found and the store are just for large scale manufacturing purposes. It is best to use the information below to adjust the size for your pets exact measurements. It will fit way better than anything found in store. The last key thing to note is that the neck and stomach strap overlap. This helps dial in sizing for a better fit. We will go over this in future steps.

How to Measure Pets NECK

  1. Use a soft, flexible measuring tape or a piece of string.

  2. Position the tape or string around the pets neck, where a collar would usually sit (between the base of the skull and the top of the shoulders).

  3. Ensure the tape/string is snug but not tight; you should be able to fit two fingers underneath.

  4. Record the measurement where the tape or string meets itself. If using string, measure it against a ruler to find the neck size. Add 1-2 inches so the end product is not to tight.

How to Measure Pets GIRTH

  1. Use a soft, flexible measuring tape or a piece of string.

  2. Locate the widest part of your pets chest, typically right behind the front legs.

  3. Ensure the tape/string is snug but not tight; you should be able to fit two fingers underneath.

  4. Record the measurement where the tape or string meets itself. If using string, measure it against a ruler to find the neck size. Add 1-2 inches so the end product is not to tight.

How to Measure Pets LENGTH

  1. Use a soft, flexible measuring tape or a piece of string.

  2. Locate the base your pets neck. From the base of the neck measure straight back along the back to the center point of the hind legs.

  3. Record the measurement where the tape or string lands. If using string, measure it against a ruler to find the neck size. Add or substract from the over length for a custom fit.

How to Print and Adjust Pattern

How to Pick the Correct Size and How to Print the Right Pages

  1. After taking your pets measurements. Look at the size chart to find out the best base size to start. Keep in mind pets come in all different sizes so you may need to pick a size close to your measurements. If you are in between sizes go for the size that best matches the girth.

  2. When you decide on the size. It is best to use the page chart to avoid printing the entire pattern (SMALL 1-9, 26 | MEDIUM 1-4, 10-16, 26 | LARGE 1-4, 16-26 | X-LARGE 1-4, 21-31)

How to Adjust the Pattern to Exact Measurements

The MAIN PANEL can be adjusted to any measurements. After picking the best size for your pet. The next step is adjusting the MAIN PANEL to work with your exact measurements. This panel can be adjusted in 3 areas NECK, GIRTH, and LENGTH. We will be walking through each adjustments to give you the best end product.

ADJUSTING NECK MEASUREMENTS

The first adjustment on the MAIN PANEL is the NECK. This section of the pattern can be extended or shortened to best match your measurements. Keep in mind the front strap overlaps. This will play a factor when adjusting the NECK section.

ADJUSTING GIRTH MEASUREMENTS

The Second adjustment is GIRTH. When making adjustments to this measurement you will need the MAIN PANEL and STOMACH STRAP PANEL.

The STOMACH STRAP PANEL can be adjusted two different ways WIDTH and LENGTH. Adjusting the width will make the STOMACH STRAP PANEL extra wide or narrow. This will be the top edge of the STOMACH STRAP PANEL. If you make adjustments to the width you will need to match the width on both STOMACH STRAP PANEL and MAIN PANEL.

Moving LENGTH of the STOMACH STRAP PANEL adjustments. This is done by extending or shortening the bottom edge of the STOMACH STRAP PANEL. This measurement will help make the jacket fit better. When extending or shortening. Move the bottom edge keeping the same width and match the curve of the outside edges.

ADJUSTING LENGTH MEASUREMENTS

The third adjustment is LENGTH. When making adjustments to this measurement you will need the MAIN PANEL.

Using your pets length measurement. Extend or shorten the top edge of the MAIN PANEL to match your pets measurement. When adjusting the top edge be sure to taper the edge back down to match the bottom edge before reaching the STOMACH STRAP PANEL section of the pattern.

STEP BY STEP ASSEMBLY

STEP 1

  1. Start by grabbing the MAIN PANEL and STOMACH STRAP PANEL.

  2. Open up the MAIN PANEL with right sides facing up.

  3. Line up the top edge of the STOMACH STRAP PANEL and the side edges of the MAIN PANEL. Make sure the orientation of the STOMACH STRAP PANEL is correct with the side edges of the MAIN PANEL.

  4. Place the right sides together lining up the straight edges.

  5. Stitch at .25 inch seam allowance.

STEP 2

  1. This step is optional. It will add a professional look and make for a more durable jacket.

  2. Fold the STOMACH STRAP PANEL down with right sides facing up.

  3. Fold seam allowance towards the center of the MAIN PANEL.

  4. Add a top stitch to seam.

Pro Tip: Try using an edge presser foot to make uniform stitches. The edge presser foot specialized attachment designed to help guide fabric for precise and straight stitching, especially along the edges. It typically has a metal guide in the center or side that aligns with the edge of the fabric, ensuring that the stitches are uniformly spaced from the edge throughout the sewing process.

This tool is particularly useful for achieving perfect topstitches, as it allows for even and consistent spacing, giving a neat and professional finish to garments and other sewn items. By keeping the fabric edge running smoothly against the guide, sewers can maintain a straight line, resulting in a polished and tidy stitch appearance.

STEP 3

  1. Grab MAIN PANEL and STOMACH STRAP PANEL secondary fabric panels.

  2. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the secondary fabric panels.

  3. Open up the MAIN PANEL with right sides facing up.

  4. Line up the top edge of the STOMACH STRAP PANEL and the side edges of the MAIN PANEL. Make sure the orientation of the STOMACH STRAP PANEL is correct with the side edges of the MAIN PANEL.

  5. Place the right sides together lining up the straight edges.

  6. Stitch at .25 inch seam allowance.

Top Stitch

  1. This step is optional. It will add a professional look and make for a more durable jacket.

  2. Fold the STOMACH STRAP PANEL down with right sides facing up.

  3. Fold seam allowance towards the center of the MAIN PANEL.

  4. Add a top stitch to seam.

STEP 4

  1. Grab HOOD PANEL place secondary fabric panels off to the side. We will only be working with the main fabric panels to start.

  2. Using the pattern locate the "eyelet placement guide". Cut the circle out of the pattern.

  3. Place pattern on right side of the fabric panel. Mark the eyelet placement guide with chalk on both HOOD PANELS.

  4. Use scissors or hole punch to cut out eyelet placement guides for eyelet installation.

STEP 5

  1. This step is optional. Depending on what type of fabric you are using. It may be beneficial to add interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric over the eyelet placement guide.

  2. The interfacing will will create more structure and secure the eyelet in place. This technique is mostly used for stretchy fabrics.

  3. The other option is using plastic washers that fit around the eyelets. These washers come with some eyelet kits.

  4. For this project I will be using the plastic washers. I found they work great and they save time when it comes to the assembly.

STEP 6

  1. Grab eyelet set.

  2. Feed eyelet hole through the eyelet placement guide from the right side of the fabric (I am using the plastic washers. I placed one plastic washer on each side of the fabric).

  3. Slide back section of eyelet on to eyelet from the wrong side of the fabric.

  4. Install the eyelet with hammer die or die press. I will be using a hammer die. These typically come with eyelets and they are very easy to use. Place the right side of the eyelet on the base. Insert the die rod into the backend of the eyelet from the wrong side of the fabric. Hammer firmly but not to hard. Stretch fabric after hammering to make sure eyelet is secure.

  5. Repeat steps above for the opposite HOOD PANEL.

STEP 7

  1. Grab MIDDLE HOOD PANEL and HOOD PANEL. Place secondary fabric layers off to the side.

  2. Locate the "back edge" on the HOOD PANEL pattern and the longer edge on the MIDDLE HOOD PANEL. We will be sewing the back edge of the HOOD PANEL to the longer edge of the MIDDLE HOOD PANEL.

  3. Since this is a very curved edge. It is best to sew as you go without adding pins. This is a preference. Feel free to add pins if needed.

  4. Place the right sides together lining up the correct edges.

  5. Stitch at .25 inch seam allowance.

STEP 8

  1. Grab the opposite HOOD PANEL.

  2. Repeat steps above. Sewing the HOOD PANEL to the opposite side of the MIDDLE HOOD PANEL at .25 inch seam allowance.

STEP 9

  1. Holding the sewn together HOOD PANELS. Flip the right sides out.

  2. Locate the seam allowance. Fold both sides towards the center of the MIDDLE HOOD PANEL.

  3. Add a top stich to both seams

STEP 10

  1. Grab HOOD PANEL and MIDDLE HOOD PANEL secondary fabric layers.

  2. Repeat steps 7, 8, and 9 above.

  3. Sew the HOOD PANELS to the MIDDLE HOOD PANEL at .25 inch seam allowance.

  4. Fold the seam allowance toward the center of the MIDDLE HOOD PANEL and add a top stitch.

STEP 11

  1. Grab both HOOD PANEL assemblies main and secondary fabric layers.

  2. Place the right sides together line up the seams and panels.

  3. Place a few pins to prevent layers from moving around.

  4. Stitch front edge at .25 inch seam allowance.

STEP 12

  1. After sewing the front edge of the HOOD PANEL assembly. Flip the right sides out.

  2. Line up both the secondary and main fabric layer evenly.

  3. Add a top/edge stitch as close as you can to the front edge of the HOOD PANEL assembly.

STEP 13

  1. Using the pattern located the hem guide on the HOOD PANEL.

  2. Mark the hem guide on the HOOD PANEL assembly. Be sure to mark the hem guide on entire front edge.

  3. Stitch directly on top of hem guide

Note: The hem guide will become the loop sleeve for the cord so you need to make the stitch on the outside of the eyelet.

STEP 14

  1. Grab the LEASH COVER PANEL both secondary and main fabric layers.

  2. Place the right sides together.

  3. Stitch the outside edge at .25 inch seam allowance.

  4. Do not stitch the bottom edge.

STEP 15

  1. After stitching the LEASH COVER PANEL flip the right sides out.

  2. Use scissors or pointy object to poke out all corners.

  3. With the corners popped out. Add a top stitch to the outside edge. Leave bottom edge unstitched.

STEP 16

  1. Grab POCKET PANEL both secondary and main fabric layers.

  2. Using the pattern locate the bottom edge. This is the edge we will not be stitching.

  3. Place the right sides together. Lining up the outside edges.

  4. Stitch the outside edge at .25 inch seam allowance. Leave bottom edge unstitched.

STEP 17

  1. After sewing the POCKET PANEL flip the right sides out.

  2. Poke out all corners.

STEP 18

  1. Grab the POCKET FLAP PANEL both secondary and main fabric layers.

  2. Place the right sides together lining up the outside edges.

  3. Stitch the outside edge at .25 inch seam allowance. Leave the top edge unstitched.

STEP 19

  1. After sewing the POCKET FLAP PANEL flip the right sides out.

  2. Poke out all corners.

  3. Add a top stitch to the outside edge leaving the bottom edge unstitched.

STEP 20

  1. This step is optional. Grab both the POCKET PANEL and POCKET FLAP PANEL.

  2. Using a serger or zig sag stitch. Clean up the raw edge of each panel by serging or adding a zig zag stitch.

  3. Depending on the fabric you are using this will help prevent frying and ultimately make for a stronger jacket.

STEP 21

  1. Grab MAIN PANEL, HOOD PANEL, and LEASH COVER PANEL assemblies.

  2. Starting with MAIN PANEL. Open the panel with right sides facing up. Mark the center of the top edge. This is the curved edge where the hood will be placed.

  3. Mark the center on the bottom edge of the HOOD PANEL assembly.

  4. Begin lining up assemblies on the center marks. Be sure to add LEASH COVER PANEL in between HOOD and MAIN PANEL assemblies. Place the wrong side of the LEASH COVER PANEL to the right side of the MAIN PANEL directly on the center mark.

  5. Place the right side HOOD PANEL on top of the LEASH PANEL directly on the center mark.

  6. Since this is a curve we will be placing pin in the center and sewing as we go. The pin will help keep the panels centered as we sew.

  7. With all panels together and lined up on the center mark. Stitch as close as you can to the edge. This is a placement stitch. It will secure all of the assembles together and make future steps easier.

STEP 22

  1. Grab both MAIN PANEL assemblies the secondary and main fabric layers.

  2. Place the right sides together lining up the outside edges.

  3. Before stitching designated a small section on the bottom edge to no stitch. This will be the area we use to pull the right sides out after stitching. Leave a 2-4 inch gap at the bottom of the MAIN PANEL.

  4. Stitch outside edge at .25 inch seam allowance skipping the 2-4 inch gap at the bottom edge.

STEP 23

  1. After stitching the outside edge. Located the gap at the bottom edge.

  2. Pull the right sides out.

  3. Poke out all the corners and line up the outside edges.

  4. To seal off the bottom edge opening. Roll the edges over so the right sides are together.

  5. Place a few pins to secure all the layers together.

  6. Add a top/edge stitch to seal off the off the opening. Continue the top stitch around the entire outside edge.

STEP 24

  1. Grab POCKET PANEL and MAIN PANEL assembly.

  2. Using the pattern mark the pocket placement guide on the MAIN PANEL assembly.

  3. With the pocket placement guides mark. Grab the POCKET PANEL. Place the POCKET PANEL in between the guides.

  4. Roll the POCKET PANEL over the marking near the bottom edge of the MAIN PANEL assembly so the right sides are together.

  5. Sew the bottom edge of the POCKET PANEL at .25 inch seam allowance.

STEP 25

  1. After stitching the bottom edge. Roll the POCKET PANEL over so the right side of the fabric is facing up and the POCKET PANEL falls in the middle of both pocket placement marks.

  2. Make sure the POCKET PANEL is laying flat. Add a top/edge stitch to the outside edge leaving the top edge unstitched. The top edge will end up being the pocket opening.

STEP 26

  1. Grab POCKET FLAP PANEL and MAIN PANEL assembly.

  2. Place the POCKET FLAP PANEL directly above the POCKET PANEL.

  3. Make sure the POCKET FLAP PANEL falls over the POCKET PANEL.

  4. Just like in step 24 roll the POCKET FLAP PANEL over so the right side is facing the right side of the MAIN PANEL assembly.

  5. Stitch top edge at .25 inch seam allowance.

STEP 27

  1. After stitching the top edge. Roll the POCKET FLAP PANEL over so the right side of the fabric is facing up.

  2. Add a top/edge stitch to the top edge of the POCKET FLAP PANEL.

STEP 28

  1. Next we will be installing the snap buttons to the POCKET FLAP PANEL.

  2. Using the pattern mark the snap button placement guides. Feel free to add the snap buttons anywhere on the POCKET FLAP PANEL. I decided to add two snap buttons instead of just the one.

  3. Mark where you want the snap buttons.

  4. Cut or punch to holes in the POCKET FLAP PANEL.

STEP 29

  1. Grab your snap buttons. I will be adding the flat outside part of the snap button to the right sides of the POCKET FLAP PANEL.

  2. Feed the top of snap button through the hole.

  3. Add the backing.

  4. Using a hammer die. Place the top portion of the snap button on the base. insert the rod into the backend of the snap button.

  5. Hammer the rod to secure the snap button down. Feel free to install snap buttons with a hammer die or press.

STEP 30

  1. Using the same process add the second part of the snap button to the POCKET PANEL.

  2. The best way to line up the button is to lay the POCKET FLAP PANEL out flat over the POCKET PANEL and mark where the top section of the snap button lands.

  3. Use the same steps above to install the bottom section of the snap button.

  4. If you choose to add more more snap buttons. Repeat steps above to install the buttons.

STEP 31

  1. Next we will add another snap button to the LEASH COVER PANEL.

  2. Place the snap button at the top portion of the LEASH COVER PANEL.

  3. Install the top section of the snap button on the LEASH COVER PANEL.

  4. Lay the LEASH COVER PANEL out flat. Mark where the top section of the snap button lands.

  5. Using the marking. Add the bottom section of the snap button using the steps above.

STEP 32

  1. The last snap button will be added to the MIDDLE HOOD PANEL. This will help keep the hood from bouncing around.

  2. The best way to do this is to fold the jacket in half and see where the hood panel falls.

  3. Mark the center of the MIDDLE HOOD PANEL and where is falls on the center MAIN PANEL.

  4. Add snap buttons to marked areas using installation steps above.

STEP 33

  1. Locate the STOMACH STRAP PANELS and Velcro strips.

  2. The Velcro can be 1-2 inch width and cut to any size length. The longer the Velcro strip the more adjustment you will have. This will allow the panel to overlap further up the sides of the jacket.

  3. Place Velcro on STOMACH STRAP PANELS. One strip will be placed on the right side and one strip will be placed on the wrong side of the STOMACH STRAP PANEL fabric. Feel free to use adhesive Velcro or sew on. Adhesive can help keep the strip in place for easier sewing.

  4. With both Velcro strips in place. Stitch the outside edge securing the Velcro strip down.

STEP 34

  1. Move to front section of the MAIN PANEL.

  2. Place the second strip on the front arms of the MAIN PANEL.

  3. Stitch the Velcro down same as the step above.

STEP 35

  1. Next we will be adding a button hold for the leash opening. This hole will be added under the LEASH COVER PANEL going through both layers of the MAIN PANEL.

Using a buttonhole presser foot on a domestic sewing machine simplifies the process of creating buttonholes. Here’s how to use one:

  1. Attach the Buttonhole Foot: Remove the current presser foot from your sewing machine and attach the buttonhole foot. This is typically done by clipping the foot onto the shank. Ensure it is securely in place.

  2. Mark the Fabric: Before sewing, mark the position and length of your buttonhole on the fabric. This usually involves marking the start and end points of the buttonhole, ensuring it is big enough for your button to fit through comfortably.

  3. Position the Fabric: Place the fabric under the presser foot, aligning the start mark with the needle's position. The buttonhole foot will have a guide that should be parallel to the buttonhole's length direction.

  4. Set the Sewing Machine: Select the buttonhole stitch on your sewing machine. Many machines have a one-step or four-step buttonhole setting. If your machine has a one-step function, it will create the buttonhole automatically based on the size of the button you set in the foot. For a four-step buttonhole, you will need to go through each step manually, following your machine’s instructions.

  5. Start Sewing: Lower the presser foot and start sewing. If your machine has a one-step buttonhole function, it will stitch the entire buttonhole automatically. For four-step buttonholes, follow your machine's manual to sew each side and bar tack separately. Keep the fabric steady and let the machine pull it through; do not push or pull the fabric.

  6. End the Buttonhole: Once the machine completes the buttonhole, raise the needle and presser foot, and cut the thread. If your machine requires manual steps, complete all steps to finish the buttonhole.

  7. Cut the Buttonhole Open: Use a seam ripper or small scissors to carefully cut open the buttonhole. Insert a pin at one end of the buttonhole to prevent accidentally cutting beyond the end stitches.

Remember, the specifics can vary based on your sewing machine model, so refer to your machine’s manual for detailed instructions tailored to your equipment. Practicing on scrap fabric before working on your actual project is always a good idea to ensure perfect results.

STEP 36

  1. Next we will be adding the cord through the eyelets. Feel free to any style of cord.

  2. To feed a cord through the eyelets of a hood, follow these steps:

    1. Attach a Safety Pin: Secure a safety pin to one end of the cord. This will serve as a guide that makes it easier to feed the cord through the eyelets.

    2. Start at One End: Insert the safety pin and the attached cord into one of the eyelets on the hood. Make sure it's the eyelet closest to where you want the drawstring to begin.

    3. Thread Through the Eyelets: Gently pull the safety pin and the cord through the eyelet, then slide it along the inside hem of the hood to the next eyelet. Continue this process, alternating eyelets, until the cord comes out of the opposite end.

    4. Remove the Safety Pin: Once the cord is through all the eyelets, remove the safety pin from the end of the cord.

    5. Adjust the Cord: Even out the cord ends and adjust the length so that the hood gathers evenly when the cord is pulled. add cord stoppers and tie knots at the ends of the cord to prevent it from slipping back through the eyelets.

    6. Burn Ends: Using a lighter burn the ends to prevent frying. This only works if you are using a nylon base cord.

FINISHED

The final step is adding your custom branding I recommend adding tabs to the front elastic loops for easy cinch adjustment. Adding a branded leather patch to your pet jacket is a fantastic way to customize and elevate the final product. By incorporating your brand, you not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also infuse a sense of identity and uniqueness into the design. Here's how the process works, especially with the use of double-sided rivets, to secure the branded leather effectively:

  1. Branded Leather Creation: The first step involves creating a leather patch that carries your brand's logo or name. This can be achieved through various methods such as stamping, burning, laser engraving, or embossing, depending on the desired effect and the resources available. The key is to ensure clarity and durability of the branding on the leather, as this will be a prominent feature of the pet jacket.

  2. Positioning: Once the branded leather patch is ready, the next step is to decide on its placement on the pet jacket. The location is crucial as it affects visibility and aesthetics. Common spots include the front center, where it's most visible, or on a discreet side for a more understated approach. The goal is to choose a spot that complements the design of the fanny pack and enhances its overall look.

  3. Using Double-Sided Rivets: Double-sided rivets are chosen for their strength and ability to securely fasten the leather patch without damaging the materials. To attach the patch, small holes are made in the corners of the leather patch and corresponding spots on the pet jacket. The double-sided rivets are then inserted through these holes from the underside of the pet jacket fabric, through the leather patch, and capped on the top side. A rivet setter tool is used to clamp down the rivets, ensuring a tight and secure attachment.

Adding a branded leather patch with double-sided rivets to a pet jacket not only personalizes the item but also significantly boosts its value, making it a unique piece that stands out. This customization is a testament to craftsmanship and attention to detail, reflecting the maker's pride and the brand's identity. It transforms the pet jacket from a mere accessory into a statement piece, enhancing its appeal to customers looking for something special and personal.
